I played bass originally in Area 51 with the likes of Bill King, Patrick Melville and Smokin' Joe Straight doing some hard rockin' blues. In 1999, I started a band called The Malcolm Clark Band and have since been performing the Puget Sound area. We released a cd in 2000 that includes Ernie Perea on sax, Mike Ernesti on drums, Smokin' Joe Straight on harp, Tom Brooks on standup bass and myself on guitar/vocals. My influences in early days was all country (50's and 60's), 70's rock, 80's disco, 90's smooth jazz and blues. I have written most all my songs with my trusty Ovation and do much acoustic solo work as well as host acoustic open mics around western WA. Currently, I have played much of my time with Smokin' Joe Straight, Mike Coucoules, Mark Bertoglio. Others I have sat in with; , and more.
2005 The Malcolm Clark Band won the Blues award from The Weekly Volcano.

Billy has been playing the guitar for approximately 34 yrs. He got his first guitar when he was 5 and soon after that started taking lessons. His first guitar hero was John Denver. However, it didn’t take too long before the Sounds of Rock-N-Roll to exasperate his parents. While in high school, Billy played in rock-n-roll bands including the high school concert band, of which he played Tuba, Baritone, and Bass Drum. Within his 34 years devoted to the guitar, Billy has studied classical guitar, music theory, experienced session work, and performed in various clubs through out the United States. At present, he has been performing with the Billy Shew Band in the local club scene around the Pacific North West.

30 year veteran keyboard player originally from Northern California, has lived in the Northwest since 1992. Johnny has a wide range of musical knowledge, yet a distinct style all his own. Johnny produced and recorded a vinyl album in 1979 with "Spectra", a popular all original progessive rock band from the Chico, CA area. In the late 80's, he was keyboard player for a later version of "Bob Wiers" "Kingfish" with Dave Torbert from "The New Riders Of The Purple Sage" and performed in many Bay Area (SF) clubs including "The Old Waldorf". Ear trained(self taught), Johnny has the ability to learn and adapt to about anyone's songs that he has never heard. Altough he is not a 'lead' singer, his harmony vocals can add alot to a band's sound. Johnny currently performs with Tacoma's own "Loose Gravel and the Quarry", however is open for hire as well. (Drums) I (Malcolm Clark) had my first opportunity to play with Mark Bertolio at The Shire in Chehalis as he was drumming for the Ryan T. Higgins Band back in 2004. He had a great ear, his timing was dead on and the groove locked in with the bass player, I was impressed! Well it took over a year to get hooked up with him again, but I remembered him. A drummer-dude with 40 years under his belt, influenced by the likes of Buddy Rich and David Garibaldi, He has played with The Blues Torpedos, Ryan T. Higgins and The Brian Feist Experience. He is now a crucial element in the rhythm section of The Malcolm Clark Band.

I was handed a guitar back in 1970, when i was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida. Man you can have all that humidity and all those alligators and all those bugs. Over those years I wrote a number of songs. I have always wanted to play in a band. I do alot of improvisation (can't believe it, I spelled that word right.) I am always ready to learn. I do have the abilty to follow along and pickup the chords. Since I played for my own enjoyment making music as I go. i lack alot of the skills necessary, but certainly am willing to learn. When my xwife and I played music together, we sang alot of John Dever songs, and some folk songs. I know I have always loved to listen to the blues, and have wanted to learn it. In the past months, Malcom has been learnin' me some skills. I must admit there is much to hear in this music game.

Harmonica is my main squeeze; been harpin' for 22 years and I'm gettin pretty good at it. Blues is my forte but rock and country and folk are all in there too. I just love playing and look forward to any opportunity to make music with like minded musicians. I also play 12-string and have a recently completed CD of original work entitled "Blues for Company." Been in and around several bands over the years and I've learned to accept one thing gracefully: All gigs end sooner or later, there are no exceptions. I'd love the chance to play and work with anyone who has been bitten by the muse. I'm easy going, understand my ego well enough to support someone else's without feeling damaged. Life is short; music makes it sweet. Peace, Gant Previous Bands: Pumphouse Blues Band, Showdown

The Music: I play a wide variety of music, from Blues, to Rock, to Country, to Soul. My first love, however is Delta Blues, from which all of the others originate. My style is characterized by deep, soulful vocals, and strong rhythms, with a healthy dose of slide guitar. I suit my sets to the audience, and will play whatever gets the best response from the crowd. From sensitive ballads to hell-bent rock and roll, I have a wide range of styles to suit any audience. I play primarily covers, but also a substantial number of originals. The Instruments: I play acoustic 6-string, bottleneck-style dobro, and conventional and slide electric. I provide my own rhythm section in the form of a stomp box, so the beat is never lost, though I also excel with a band behind me. Influences: My primary influences are Son House, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson and Tampa Red, all Depression-era bluesmen. But subsequent influences include more contemporary artists such as Robert Cray, Paul Simon, Keith Whitley, Alan Jackson and Eric Clapton.

Started playing the harmonica 1984. Just noodling off and on for myself. 95 rehersed with 1st band. Played with different incarnations until 98. Hooked back up with Malcom in 99 to play his material. Have played in his band since then. Ocasional jams and open mics. I have all my own gear, and a couple of monitors. (Harp, Vocals, Xtra Energy) Joe played in an established hard-rockin' blues band "Home Brew" from which "AREA 51", our friendship and musical respect grew. Joe brings a sense of energy and spirit all wrapped in a personality that gains new fans with every gig he plays. With faultless musical instincts and 19 years spent perfecting his technique, this Iowa transplant provides the "soloistic" cornerstone for this band. A veteran of several local start-up bands, Joe has really "come of age" and has quickly become recognized as a "top notch" harp player. Currently a member of The Malcolm Clark Band.

ah... I've been living and playing music in Olympia, WA for 14 years now. I've primarily played blues-based stuff but I love to play folk, harder rock (a la Zeppelin) and bluegrass. Mainly, I like playing live in as many different situations as I can. I enjoy the spontenaity of the live experience and I definitely believe in making the music our own. I'm pretty worthless in a top 40 cover band. I just do my thing with my sound and that's about it. My schedule is kinda tight but I'm always interested in hearing from people... especially if there's an opportunity for some gigs.

Mofessor, aka, MAURICE "MO" McCONNELL is no new comer to the blues and has been a solid fixture on the Northwest Blues scene for 29 years. A masterful piano player blended with a rich soulful voice Mofessor is a man of extraordinary talents who's distinct style stands out. Being well schooled in the blues at a time when Curtis Salgado and Robert Cray were starting out in Eugene, Mofessor joined up with Bill Rhoades. "Bill had a great blues collection and gave me my first real taste for piano blues". Mofessor has teamed up with such great blues performers as Bill Rhoades, Ellen Whyte, Jesse Sampsel, Paul Delay, Stu & Lynn Ann Hyde, Jim Wallace, Floyd Dickson, Big Monte, Kelly Thibodeaux and The Etouffee Band, Henry Cooper and many other great acts as far back as 1976. Having toured the U.S.A. several times, mainly as a sideman Mofessor took the next logical step forming the band "MOFESSOR" in 2003, releasing his first CD named for the original hit song "RED HOT BOOGIE". Mofessor's current all star line up includes STAN BECRAFT on Bass (Big Monte), TIM DONAHUE at the drums (Cherry Poppin Daddies, Yngwie Malmsteen) and MAURICE "MOFESSOR" McCONNELL playing Piano/keyboards, Guitar, Vocals and Harmonica. On occasion Mofessor has featured guest performers into the show such as JC Rico, Mike Meyer, Josh Fulero and other top NW blues musicians. For Blues lovers in and around the northwest, Mofessor has been a treat for his fans every where. His styles and inspirations move from a Longhair New Orleans groove to a Chicago Otis Spann boogie, and then out of no where the guitar gets slung on and we're in Texas! Mofessor can expand on any kind of music, using his unique abilities to take a song in any direction, turn it inside out, then bring it back to where it started from. Mofessor will immerce you in groove-heavy gumbo's of Chicago blues to the swampy New Orleans rhythms or funky R&B, bringing you up out of your chair and onto the dance floor.

I have been playing drums off and on for nearly 40 years. I started in grammar school in the Bay Area and eventually ended up doing some sound/PA work in high school. Needless to say, the SF Bay Area of the 60s and 70s provided a rich and eclectic music scene. I got back into playing in my early 20s. I recently moved to Vancouver, have sat in with a few jam sessions, and would really like to play regularly with some other geezers. I just wanna play the blues - practice once a week at least and perform once or twice a month. I work full time so late weeknights and travel are not gonna happen. Current Favorites: Dylan (Bob), Jimmy Smith, SRV, Lucinda Williams, Susan Tedeschi, Delbert McClinton, Art Blakey, Latin Jazz, (eclectic, ain't it), Chicago Blues, etc., etc. I was in Chicago a couple of weeks ago, went to a little place called Rosa's, and got to see Pinetop Perkins sit in with one of the house bands. He's 92! and apparently the secret to longevity is eating McDs cheeseburgers and smoking cigarettes.

Currently, I’m not committed to a band, but doing fill-in jobs and. would like to find a new group to work with. I have good transportation, am dependable & easy to work with, I don’t use drugs or drink excessively. I play all styles of music and sing. I do have a day job, which is low stress and allows me the flexibility to chouse the musical situations I get involved with. I do prefer to stay close to the Tacoma area, but I enjoy to get away for the weekend occasionally. Tim Hall "Too Tall" Guitars / Vocals Tim Hall was born in Portland Oregon. He moved to Tacoma Wa. in his early teens where he started playing drums in local bands. At the age of 17 Tim's interests turned from drums to guitar and he started to pursue a career in song writing. Tim then formed a band called "Grizzly", which did all original material, and within 8 months they were playing rock festivals with bands like: The Young Bloods, Redbone, and Commander Cody to name a few... Tim's first "taste"of The Blues was when he had the opportunity to open for the legendary Albert Collins at The Break Thru Night Club, up until that point Tim had only listened to The Blues on recordings, seeing Albert live was a real "eye opener" for him as well as other local musicians. Not long after,"Grizzly" disbanded Tim helped form a new band called "Foghorn Leghorn" members included: Robert Cray, Richard Cousins and long time friend Jho Blenis... although the band only lasted 8 months, they made a mark as one of the area's first local Blues bands. Trying to broaden his horizons, Tim Moved to Hawaii, but found it very confining musically so he moved back to the mainland after a year. In 1978 Tim rounded up some good friends to form the band "Nyanza". This band would stick it out for 10 years, playing the majority of clubs in the Tacoma, Seattle area. Performing mainly cover songs, Tim felt it was time to develop his own style and once again turned to The Blues. In 1989 Tim released his first album titled "After Hours" under The "Tim Hall Band" name. In 1994 The Tim Hall Band signed with Outlaw Records and released "Ghosts in the Closet" which really helped the band gain some momentum in the local scene. By 1999 the band released their third CD titled "Runnin' with the Blues" on Seaport Records. All three recordings are still selling very well on the local market... In 2002 Tim was awarded "Blues Man of the Year" by the Tacoma Blues Foundation...Now with a brand new CD due out this year. The Tim Hall Band is still on a roll...

I've been singing for almost 17 years (since the age of 4), and performing for about 16 years. I sing a lot of pop, country, rock, r&b, and hip hop, but I have sang various other types too. I took years of vocal training (can't remember how many exactly since I took them off and on). I also write music. In addition, I have trained in and been involved in acting and modeling.

I've been director of music at a church in Tacoma for the past 20 years. I direct choirs, accompany on the piano, arrange music, and play tons of guitar both solo and as an ensemble member. I have a recording studio in my home and have recorded a number of cds both home and at other sites. For the past ten years I've been deep into playing traditional Irish music with slainte and Bobryken. I've also played lots of "folk" music over the years and also continue to perform locally on the classical guitar as a solist and with duets, trios, etc. Obviously I'm a flexible musician who enjoys many styles. I grew up in the Bronx, NY, taught myself to play piano and guitar before going to school and studying music "seriously."

I've been playing in Seattle for the last 10 to 15 years. I've played with just about every R&B band in town and a number of Blues and Jazz combos. At present I'm playing a lot of duo's, trio's, session and sub work. I'd also like to mention a new quartet I'm playing with, with a real "hammond B12" getting that real Booker T and Jimmy Smith sound, it is the real deal. I also have overseas experience having played in Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan. If you need a guitar player that dependable sound great and has the experience of a life time give me a call. Also if you want to hear me live call and I'll let you know where I'm playing.

Born in Los Angeles, California on January 16, 1960, Annieville was 11 years old when her family moved to a farm in Oregon. Her parents soon made sure she had piano lessons, no easy task at the time in the small town of Grants Pass! She worked with several teachers throughout her childhood who nurtured her talents and love for the piano. Annieville was performing music professionally by the age of 14. She went on after high school to study at the prestigious Cornish Institute in Seattle where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in music performance and composition. In Annieville’s 20-year blues career, she has shared the concert stage with national blues legends Cash McCall, Big Joe Duskin, Lee Oskar, Pinetop Perkins, Maria Muldaur, Angela Strehli, Little Bill and the Blue Notes, Duffy Bishop, Too Slim, Cephas and Wiggans, Big Jack Johnson, Alice Stuart, Tracy Nelson and Gaye Adegbalola & Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women. "Born and raised on a small farm in South Puget Sound where, beginning at the ripe old age of four, I spent countless hours working out arrangements and harmonies with my younger sis Marlys, of old timey favorites for long truck rides with my dad. I graduated from Franklin Pierce High School, and started dabbling with the music business at the age of 13. The wood shop teacher at Ford Junior High, Mr. Hill, was the drummer in my first band. I Had my first paying gig at a dance at a catholic school when I was 15. It should be noted that the school adapted a dress policy for the bands after our performance (it seems my tight, hip-huggers, fringed vest, and the no bra thing got some nun's knickers in a knot!) My parents never approved, but always allowed me to have practice in their garage (probably so they could keep track of me). Their ever constant comment was "When are you going to get a real job?" I finally believed they were right and have been in college, and will graduate in the spring 2004 with my BA in Arts and Science. I guess I want to see if I might be good at something other than music, (the jury is still out on that). "In January of 1972 I moved to New York where, after about two months of trying, finally locked in on a band that worked. After our first audition we started gigging in western New York, Niagara Falls, Buffalo, Rochester and all the small podunk towns in a 200 mile radius, and worked every week for a solid two year run until I got pregnant. I moved back to the North west in 1974 where my first son was born, and other than frequent 6 month road trips stayed on the left coast. "The usual genre of music for the numerous bands I have formed or been in was anything from top 40 rock to funk and R&B (my favorite), even some 50's bands, i.e. Angel Baby and her Daddyos in Detroit in the 70's. I believe that the blues are at the heart of all music, and I am so happy to be Home! "With a career in the music business spanning 3+ decades the idea of still paying dues seems a bit absurd, but never too daunting a task. The only place on the planet that I feel safe and a sense of belonging is the stage, and I wouldn't trade that for all the husbands in Las Vegas! "My musical endeavors have taken me all over the U.S. including Alaska, and Hawaii. I have traveled to Korea on a USO tour and played the Executive Inn in Buffalo New York, where I rubbed elbow's with the likes of Greg Morris (from Mission Impossible) then off to Rochester NY, where I worked for the Mafia. It has been a long continuing saga of "wrong place right time" or "right place, wrong time" for as long as I can remember, but I wouldn't change a thing. Now, with the new Blues Alliance project well under way, I can easily say that it has all been worth it. "This band has not only got the music potential to knock your socks off, but these guys are all great, and collectively I think we have what it takes to kick some serious butt!"

Born in Seattle, raised in Tacoma, at an early age Doug Skoog started taking piano lessons in the classical style. His teacher introduced him to a "Boogie Woogie" piano song in the 4th grade, which impassioned him to a new type of music. When his teacher tried to return him to classical music, Doug quit his formal lessons and self taught himself by listening to old black gospel and rhythm and blues records. Doug has been playing piano, Hammond B3 organ and singing ever since. Doug’s professional career began locally with the Hometown Blues Band in the 60’s/70’s. This band left Tacoma and toured several years nationally with RB Greaves (whose record -Take a Letter Maria - made Billboard Top 10). In ’73 Doug joined the Wisconsin based "Blue Tale Fly Band" which was the back-up band to James Cotton and the opening act for Siegel Schwall Band, John Prime, Sam Lay, and also the Legendary Blues Band with Pine Top Perkins. These adventures introduced Doug to the Chicago blues scene and to Bruce Iglauer (Alligator Productions) who produced and recorded Doug’s music. Returning to the Tacoma/Seattle area in the mid 70’s to raise his family, Doug still had the opportunity to play piano with legionary greats such as Chuck Berry and John Lee Hooker. Locally, he played with the Seattle Blues Review with Ann Wilson. Doug has been a player with many area blues/country/gospel bands in the 70’s-90’s to include: Jerry Miller (Moby Grape fame), Orozco, The Great Pretenders, Lion Heart and the Doug Skoog/T-Boy Neal Band to name a few. His passion always returns him to blues, which brings him to his new band the Blues Alliance Doug’s piano playing has been describe as "very funky, tight, complicated playing that you could expect to hear with any top national act" or in Chuck Berry’s words, after stopping his show to feature Doug’s playing, "This piano player is from my Al Ma mater". Doug’s soulfullness traces back to his early influences of Delta, Chicago and Gospel piano styles, a sound that can’t be missed when you listen to this great band - the Blues Alliance.

Tim Hall was born in Portland Oregon.

In my last year of high school I learned to play the bass. I started a band with other 'younsters' called WEJAM. I was influenced by Verdine White (EWF), Larry Graham (Graham Central Station) and Louis Johnson (Bro Johnson). As I got better with practice, I got to meet and take advice from Lee Ritnour, Joe Sample, Jim Cliff and Richard Marks, who was my brother's bass player. One thing they taught me was to attack with energy. It was all about having fun. I've been in a few top 40 cover bands, Orpheus, Mr. Clean, Skiner, Scenario, and Groove City. Now being with Randy, I get to really play from the heart and learn more about music and it's universal language. I am a very blessed person to be able to do the thing I love to do and be acknowledged as a good bass player. I get to be creative and disciplined at the same time.

Ricky was also with the Jazz Group "Coda" and the Charles Certain Jazz Experience and the Korla Wygal Band in the 90's. Ricky has been one of the most sought after studio musicians and band drummers in the NW for many years. Ricky is looking forward to a unique and great experience with The Randy Oxford Band. He brings diversity and style on the drums as well as a great voice.

Dennis Jones email Dennis Chester Dennis Jones was born in Montclair, New Jersey. He‚'s known as Dennis to his friends. Dennis grew up in a musical home. His mother and father were active members of their church choir. His mom also sang solo and played the piano while Dennis sang in the youth choir. Dennis' love for the blues started at a very young age listening to his mom's extensive album collection every day. As a child Dennis took piano lessons for a short time and then decided to try his hand at playing the trumpet. But it wasn't until his senior year in high school that Dennis discovered that the guitar was his instrument of choice. A friend was playing in a gig and needed Dennis' help moving a 300 lb. Hammond B3 organ. That night Dennis discovered the Hammond B3, (the hard way as he puts it) and got hooked on the electric guitar. Soon after Dennis went to his close friend and said: ‚"David, man, I want one of those things!" So they trekked on down to the local music shop and his friend pointed up on the wall and said: ‚"You want one of those." That turned out to be his Fender Stratocaster that he still plays today, thirty six years later! That 'Strat' is never left alone in the car. If he stops to buy groceries you will see his guitar on his back! Dennis‚' primary musical influences have been B.B. King, Booker T. Jones, Sylvester Stewart (Sly), Carlos Santana, Jimmi Hendrix, Roy Buchanan and Luther Allison. Over the years Dennis has played guitar and jammed with thousands of musicians of all levels and styles. His favorite being Tab Benoit at Jazzbones.Tab actually let Dennis take over on the guitar while Tab played drums. While back in Hoboken, New Jersey, Dennis played in a professional jam with Arthur Neilson, Shemekia Copeland's guitar player. However, Dennis loves seeking out new talent and feels all musicians can learn from the experienced as well as the inexperienced. "It is when one thinks they know it all and feel they don't need to learn that one stops growing." Dennis has become known for his passion and soulful playing. With his unique style of phrasing and his guitar tone you only have to hear three notes and you know it is Chester Dennis' Jones playing. Dennis has been a member of many bands and had several bands of his own but for the first time he feels he has found a band that has all of the right pieces and personalities to go all the way!

Heather sang every chance she got growing up in choral groups both in school and church. Taking top state vocal awards in Texas, Oklahoma, Washington and Oregon states, she kept busy throughout high school in competitions, pageants, and musical theater. Though trained classically, her country roots and her family‚ sassy ways drew her to the blues. At a young age her power and moxy shocked and excited many an audience. Heather has played with local bands throughout the northwest for the last five years as a featured artist as well as her own band, the eclectic "Petty Cash," playing everything from Rock & Roll, Blues, top 40 and jazz. Heather has opened for big names such as Diamond Rio and played the local fair circuit as the Evergreen State Fair competition winner of "Country Idol," and the West Coast winner for the USA Networks," "Nashville Star," competition. Written by Patrick Lee ". . . Randy was born in Ballard in 1960. At age 5 he moved to Chicago. Randy remembers growing up with music always playing in the house. In 6th grade, he took up the trombone and credits band director Steve Hoernamann as an early influence. In high school, he played in the 200 piece marching band, the concert band, and the stage band. Obviously his obsessive personality started early. Randy played in the Orange Bowl Parade and also received the Louis Armstrong award from his high school. Randy said he had to choose between music and baseball due to time constraints and we are so glad he chose music. I have a hard time seeing that distinctive figure of his in Center Field at Safeco. Although since Randy will be gracing both Cheney Stadium in Tacoma and with the Aquasox in Everett this Summer, maybe Safeco isn't so far off. Randy remembers seeing Maynard Ferguson and Led Zeppelin in high school and being impressed with their energetic performances. Anyone who has ever seen Randy knows he gives it all at every show. As Little Bill says, 110 per cent, all the time. After high school, Randy joined the Army with the understanding that he would be in the Army Band. So for the next 6 years, Randy got the best training in the world. He played all over Europe in a variety of musical settings. He played in large jazz bands using Stan Kenton and Count Basie charts. He played with the Berlin Radio Orchestra. He played in smaller combos in NCO Clubs on Earth Wind & Fire and Kool & The Gang tunes. In addition to his earlier recordings with his high school ensembles, Randy recorded LPs with The Berlin Brigade Army Band and The Ambassadors of Jazz, as well as with the Al Porcino (of Woody Herman fame) Big Band. In 1981 Randy finagled a transfer to California to Fort Ord. There, Randy hooked up with his first blues band, The Broadway Blues Band. This band included a B-3, and a three piece horn section. The highlight of their time together was playing the 25th anniversary of The Monterey Jazz Festival. What an honor! Randy played with this group until he left the Army in 1984. In his post army career Randy managed a number of Domino's Pizza franchises (I make none of this up) in the San Francisco area until he was held up at gunpoint one too many times. Randy then packed his bags and moved back to the NW to join his parents printing supply business. After settling in Redmond in 1986, Randy called up Marlee Walker who was at that time hosting her show, "All Blues", Sunday nights on KPLU-FM. Marlee sent Randy down to the Blue Monday jam at The Owl in Ballard. At Randy's first night at The Owl, he played with Dick Powell backing up singer Lily Wilde. Not bad for the new kid in town. Randy then hooked up with the band Duo Glide and ended playing Larry's in Pioneer Square on Sundays for the next few years with likes of Mark Whitman and Leslie Clinkingbeard. Playing with Les and Lily also led to many memorable nights playing with Jr. Cadillac throughout the NW. Randy's first commercial NW release is on Jr. Cadillac's 20th Anniversary cassette from the Sheraton Ballroom. In early 1989, Randy met the man who would turn out to be the most influential person in his career. Randy was asked to play at Little Bill Engelhart's 50th birthday party at Prosito's in Tacoma. Soon after, Randy was asked to join the Bluenotes and for the next 8 years played in one of the finest blues bands ever to grace NW stages. Bill considers that line-up of Randy, Buck England, Tommy Morgan, Hans Ipsen, Robbie Jordan/Brian Kent, and Hadi Al-Saadoon to be his favorite Bluenotes line up. They played the Winthrop Blues Festival, The Waterfront Festival in Portland, Gig Harbor Jazz Festival, Sun Banks, Mt Baker and every bar and club in between. During this stretch, Randy recorded a series of classic NW blues CDs with Bill. Down For Double, Another Rainy Day, Shades, Retrospectively Yours, and Sweet Cucumber '89 all have great Bill Engelhart originals with Randy blowing his bone right along. Randy attributes Bill's professionalism, consistency, and financial acumen as major factors in influencing Randy's future direction. Randy also says he learned to play the slow blues from Bill. Bill has a whole chapter in his book, "Next Stop Bakersfield", about Randy. My favorite description of Randy is in there, as Bill says it so delicately, "Randy is a ball grabber". But after 8 years on the road and a full time day job, Randy was burnt out and took a break until his next big adventure. Randy's reputation was growing by this time. His ability to quickly sight read written music has made him a favorite of NW record producers. He has appeared on over 25 CDs including Mark Riley, Annieville Blues, Led Jaxon, L.J. Porter, The Night Sticks, Kevin Wallace, Nora Michaels, and Seattle Women in Rhythm and Blues. Through 1997 and into early 1998, Randy played with the group Fat Cat, and of course won the award for "New Band of the Year" from the WBS. Fat Cat is a horn driven band featuring the strong vocals of Bear Barrus, original songs by keyboardist and vocalist Pat Gossan, Hans Ipsen and Hadi Al-Saadoon from the Little Bill band and a great rhythm section of Major Durst and James Busch. In late 1998, Randy started jamming with a Tacoma based band called Junkyard Jane. They play an eclectic array of original music based in folk, rock, blues, and country. The band features the song writing talents of Leanne Trevalyan and Billy Stoops with a solid rhythm section anchored by Barbra Blue on bass. When Randy first joined the band, he was part of a horn section with Sue Orfield on saxophone. After Sue had moved on, Randy found himself, for the first time in his career, the only horn player in the band. This new found freedom allowed Randy the room to grow and find new ways to express himself on his instrument. Randy recalls his three years with Junkyard Jane with great fondness. They quickly turned into one of the most popular bands on the NW circuit. The highlight was certainly the trip to Memphis where Junkyard Jane placed in the final 8 in national competition. This was a major achievement for a band that was not a traditional blues band. Randy contributed his playing ( Washboard Highway and Milkin' The Frog) and for the first time his singing and songwriting (Swampabilly Snake Oil Freakshow) to the first three Junkyard Jane CDs. Randy fans should seek out the first printing of Freakshow for the two extra Randy tunes, Cool Bus and 4 Dukes. After three years of touring, Randy felt he had contributed what he could to the band and felt it was time to turn his promotional and booking skills into a full time career in music. Randy credits Barb and Bill Mosher of Jake's Ales in Federal Way for helping him get started. Randy started a weekly jam session on Wednesday nights that is one of the most musician friendly nights in the local scene. With a core band including rock steady bassist Jack Kinney of Stickshift Annie and the ever smooth Andrew Clouthier of Left Hand Smoke on drums, Randy imports two special guests every week. Past guests have included Alice Stuart, Henry Cooper, John Stephan, Mike Lynch, John Hodgkin, Ned Neltner, Tommy Boyle, Perry Sanders, Tim Sherman, and Steve Bailey. Regular jammers include the horn section of Steve Sarandos and Cheryl Clark and the vocal talents of Peaches with Paul Krug on keyboards. Randy soon started working with club owner Karl Hintz and added jams on Sunday nights at The Lucky Star in Kent and Tuesday nights at The Redondo Grill in Des Moines. These jams feature Nicole Fournier on guitar, Michael Stubblefield on very electric bass, and Karl Hintz on drums. Recent guests have included Kathi MacDonald and Patti Allen. Randy then decided to get busy and began co-hosting jams on Thursday nights with Loose Gravel at Tacoma's Emerald Queen and also started up Oxford Entertainment which is booking musicians in every nook and cranny Randy can find. Bill Graham would have been very proud of this boy. If this wasn't enough, Randy and Nicole Fournier decided to start up a new band called Nicole Fournier and her 3 Lb. Universe. The band has already recorded a CD of all original music featuring the song writing and guitar playing of Nicole, the intricate and expressive keyboards of Ric Ulsky and the solid rhythm section of Michael Stubblefield and Michael Kinder on drums. Randy feels this band has amazingly talented musicians and the band has great potential for success. Randy thinks that this is a great time for blues in the NW due to the support given to him and other musicians by The Washington Blues Society. Specifically, the board of the WBS headed by Leslie Fleury has shown real commitment and dedication to the blues and to its practitioners. I think Randy's success is not due to just his talent as a trombone player. Randy takes his responsibilities very seriously. He feels very strongly that a musician should give his or her best show every time they are on stage. It costs a lot for a couple to go out to dinner these days. When you add in babysitting, parking, and cover charges, it's a real bite. By taking the time to meet the customers and get to know them, you make the people feel special and they will want to come back and hear you again. If you don't want to play for people, Randy feels you should just stay home. As I've mentioned before, and can't emphasize enough, Randy's enthusiasm for life comes through every time he plays. . ."

They've created a seasoned player with a sly knack for catchy songwriting, monster guitar chops and near genre-perfect banged-up vocals. Brewer's been living the life of a bluesman for 35 years. Although he was born and still lives in Seattle, his mom is from Florida and his dad is from Tennessee. He went to high school in Hawaii with Gabby Pahinui's kids. He's part Seminole and very proud of his American Indian heritage. After a tour in Vietnam, in 1969, he made his way back to Seattle via Texas. Once back, he toured for 21/2 years with Albert Collins. David toured Europe in 94' and 95'. He's won The Washington Blues Society's awards for "Best Guitar Player" and "Best Songwriter" several times. Although proficient in many genres, including rock and roots rock, R&B, funk, country and acoustic guitar, Pat's first love remains blues, which he began learning at age 14 with some old T-Bone Walker and B.B. King records. His musical journey has taken him many places, from 3 and a half straight years of touring 6 western states and Canada, to living in and gigging around Los Angeles and San Diego, to doing session work. In 1990, following a brief hiatus from the music business to start a family, Pat returned to his home town of Coeur d' Alene, in Northern Idaho, to provide a more relaxed atmosphere for his family and to pursue songwriting. After breaking his leg in an accident, Pat put together a small blues band to bring in some income, and two years later, found himself in an eight piece horn band called Cafe Blue, doing festivals and concerts as well as clubs. They put out a CD, "A Good Night For The Blues", featuring four of Pat's originals, which gained positive reviews from two national magazines and got airplay on college and public radio stations from Seattle to Kentucky. In 1999, Pat decided to strike out under his own name, releasing 3 more CDs, "Play Somethin' We Can Dance To", "Pat Coast Band LIVE", and Pat's favorite, "Don't Touch My Guitar." Besides gigging, Pat also enjoys carpentry work, oil painting, writing, and motorcycle riding, logging in over 8,000 miles last year. Kelly Dees has been singing almost from the time she was born. After she lost a part in the 4th grade school play because she didn't sing loud enough in the audition, her mother gave her some pointers, and from there on out, Kelly had no problems making sure her voice was heard. She went on to perform in several school, community theater and college theater productions. Her all-time favorite role was that of one of the three street urchins (Crystal) in "Little Shop of Horrors" when she was 16. She just loved the music and had such a blast singing the songs and harmonizing with her co-stars. Kelly went on to major in Theatre at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia, and though she focused on theatre in college, virtually every part she played in every show involved singing. While Kelly still has a great love of acting on stage, she eventually came to realize that she is happiest when she's singing and writing music. Kelly finds inspiration in all kinds of music and in all kinds of people and places. Her writing style varies, just as the sources of inspiration do. While some of the songs she has written are direct reflections of her own life experiences, she is also has been influenced by friends and strangers alike. "Sometimes a situation will just touch me in such a way that I just feel compelled to write about it," she says. "That's usually when the songs find me, and they just pour out." Many artists have been influential to Kelly over the years, but some of her favorites include Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Susan Tedeschi, Ray Charles, B. B. King, Nina Simone, and Billie Holiday. After settling in Tampa, Florida, she turned her attention to belting out classic blues, R&B, and jazz tunes. Initially, Kelly performed at local bars and nightclubs, covering songs made famous by artists that she greatly admires. But all the while, her own song ideas were swirling around in her head. In 2004, Kelly decided to take a break from performing in order to focus on bringing those song ideas to life, and it didn't take long. Once she made the decision to focus on writing the songs for her debut CD, "Bettin' Woman", she wrote all but two of the songs in little more than a week. With Mike Conway, owner of MCR Studios, as her producer, Kelly was able to have a remarkable roster of heavyweight blues and R&B performers backing her up on this album. She is so proud and thankful to have had the honor of working with Kevin Wilder, Richy Kicklighter, T.C. Carr, Dale Horton, Dean Germain, Theo Valentin, and Richard Jackson. Frankie J also performs on several songs, giving a memorable trombone solo on "There'll Be A Day".

Johny met Greg "White Lightnin'" Roberts, Bubba "the Unreal" McCoy, Garrett "Blues Boy G" Smith and David "Stickboy" Hudson aboard the fishing boat that dragged him from the bay. The truth is stranger and less likely than the legend. The events can't be told on this webpage, but scenes include a crappy bar with a red neon horse, an ill-fated shoreline blues and jazz club, a bizarre gathering of people dressed as bunnies, and a place on Ballard Avenue where monkeys frolic in the trees. Greg Roberts, aka "white lightnin,'" learned the blues from Telegraph Avenue guitar legend Johnny "Guitar" Knox. A long-time professional blues guitar, bass, mandolin, etc. player, Greg played with a host of great Bay Area bands, including the Hucklebucks, before moving to Seattle to help found the Johny Broomdust Band. He sings like the devil himself and plays scorching blues guitar. Bubba "the unreal" McCoy has the best blues singing voice you will ever hear, and when Bubba walks in the room, the party has begun. He plays harp and sings. Blues Boy G plays the blues, the funk, the swing, the pop, and the tango with flair and intensity. Got a shovel? Blues Boy G can dig. David "Stickboy" Hudson has a successful band of his own called the Hudson Blues Band that frequently performs in Western Washington; he is also the favorite drummer of the Johnny Broomdust Band. Johny and Greg host the Broomdust Blues of the Past Jam the first Wednesday of every month at Conor Byrne Pub and the third Wednesday of every month at the Highway 99 Club. Johny and Greg have now been hosting the jam at Conor Byrne (formerly the legendary Owl Cafe) for more than three years. The best blues players in Seattle and touring players from all over the country get up on stage for the groovingest and best attended (by all the grooviest Ballard Avenue bohemians, including numerous strikingly beautiful and brilliant women) jam in town.

But subsequent influences include more contemporary artists such as Robert Cray, Paul Simon, Keith Whitley, Alan Jackson and Eric Clapton.

Once back, he toured for 21/2 years with Albert Collins. David toured Europe in 94' and 95'. An expert guitarist, he plays acoustic blues in the rough and ready style of Lightning Hopkins and Mance Lipscomb and uptown Chicago blues in the spirit of BB King and Buddy Guy. His passionate guitar playing accompanies his soulful singing. Brian’s repertoire includes his self-penned songs and renditions of classic blues. A Washington state native, Brian has appeared at prestigious shows throughout the Northwest including Bumbershoot, the Northwest Folklife Festival, and the Winthrop Blues Festival, plus hundreds of appearances at nightclubs. He was the 1993 Washington Blues Society pick for “Best Acoustic Blues Guitarist.” He has backed up blues greats Albert Collins, Elvin Bishop, Phil Guy and others. He is a regular guitar instructor at the acclaimed Puget Sound Guitar Workshop. Brian’s current CD release, Restless Street, is his third published musical outing, and includes original songs “Too Many Trips”, “Animule Hall”, and “Hellbound Train” among other numbers. The album features solo and band performances. Many of Seattle’s talented blue players have been a part of Brian’s band, the Brian Butler Blues Band which has been a top draw in Seattle clubs. In addition, Brian is an active solo performer.

Pat Coast is a Northwest native and has been a serious student of blues guitar for over 35 years. Pat currently resides in Post Falls, ID, with his wife Roxey, 3 children, and a surly, toothless cat named Sylvester.

Also known as "T-Boy Neal", Tom's perfectionism and constant striving for that perfect tone have earned him the reputation of being a consummate bluesman. Fans and critics alike are singing the praises of this native Washington State blues guitarist. Tom began his career in Olympia, Washington in 1981 as bandleader for the Capital City’s legendary blues band "The Harmonic Tremors". In 1982 he moved to Seattle and immersed himself in the thriving Pioneer Square blues scene. From 1982 to 1996, Tom joined forces with some of the region’s top blues acts and musicians, performing and recording with John Hodgkin in "The Slackmasters" and "Drivin' Wheel"; with Mike Lynch in "Nitelife"; with Portland-based keyboardist, D.K.. Stewart; with Doug Lynn in "The Led Jaxson Band"; as co-leader, along with Perry Sanders, of Olympia's "The Steamers"; and as leader of "The T-Boy Neal Band". Tom has opened shows for John Lee Hooker, The Legendary Blues Band, Roy Buchanan and James Harman, among others. He has shared the stage with Mark DuFresne, Curtis Salgado, Jimmy McCracklin, Larry Davis, Cash McCall, Sugar Ray Norcia, and blues guitar great Ronnie Earl. While living in Boston in 1978-‘79, Tom took private blues guitar lessons from Ronnie, who taught him "practically everything I know about blues guitar". Tom is a multiple Washington Blues Society "BB Award" nominee for "Best Electric Guitar" ...and the winner of that award in both 2003, 2005 & 2006. He was also nominated for both the "Hall of Fame" and "Life Time Achievement" awards in 2006.

Kimball Conant …is an innovative stylist on six-string and slide guitar. Kimball adapted the finger-style approach from his ukulele and banjo-picking youth. Oklahoma and Kansas account for Kimball’s western swing and rockabilly roots. “I just cough up all my influences when I play—jazz, blues, country. Jimmy Rivers (Jimmy Rivers and the Cherokees) is my ideal guitar player.” Over the years Kimball has honed his chops with Seattle acts such as Dave Conant and the D-Rangers, the Sunset Hillbillies, Maia Santell, the HipShakers, Stickshift Annie. His trio, Kimball and the Fugitives, features 5-string wonder Larry Hill on bass and percussion luminaries Phil Bowden, Marty Lockwood and Alan Isaacson rotating on drums. Kimball’s vocal style is inimitable whether he’s singing blues, country, or jazz standards. A decade of travel in Latin America provides Kimball with a repertoire of tunes he sings in Spanish.

An excerp from Interview With a Phantom....Jack Cook
By Ray Varner [originally published in the WBS Bluesletter, April 2001] "I started out as a sub for Bob West who had a long running program he called King Biscuit Time. Back then nobody got paid but we played whatever we liked. Obscure recordings from our own collections; LPs, 45's and 78's. I met Carl Martin, Ted Bogan and Howard Armstrong when they came to town. We had Carl up at the radio station to do a show. Bukka (White), Furry (Lewis), (Johnny) Shines, and Mance Lipscomb also did spots on KRAB. Through the mid to late 70's Jack played blues, hokum, and old timey music with Daniel Jacoubovitch, Mike Dumovich, Doug Royce, Tom Berghan, and others at the usual haunts...The Pig, The Victrola, The G-Note, etc.

Nowadays, Jack can be found each Wednesday co-hosting a jam, with Greg Roberts and Guy Quintino, at Ballard’s Bit Tavern. The Phantoms are active, and Jack is in demand as a sideman in Portland and Seattle.

JEVON POWELL’S guitar will cure what ails you. He’s been playing since he was seven years old, and by now he’s got a lick or two! The dude does it all, blues, funk, rock. When he steps up to wail for the audience, holy crap! His playing goes from fierce to melodic, and it’s always tasty. He has played with bands in New York City, London, and San Francisco. He fronted his own blues project in Seattle before McPage recruited him. When our favorite “doc” gives you a shot from his guitar, you’re gonna want more

Their original tunes are unique and intimate, yet hard drivin' soulful pieces.

In the last twenty years I have had the opportunity to work with bands like “The Nu-vines,” “Ron Gardner & Gumbo Groove,” “The David Keys Trio,” “The Pierce college Jazz Ensemble,” “Tony & the Dreamers,” “The Sensations,” &”The Fabulous Wailers” to name a few. I love to play everything from Funk, Reggae, Latin, & Jazz, to Motown & Classic Rock. But, My roots are in the blues and I always seem to feel at home when I’m playing the blues. I am looking for a band that has Power & Finesse, Dynamics & Sensitivity, with Soulful, Creative Grooves.

Ranging from the very low-down Delta side of the blues, up tempo swings and shuffles, as well as New Orleans style grooves, Jeff can cover it all with skill and precision. Jeff , along with his vintage Gretsch drum kit, has played at all of the major blues/roots music venues in Washington state , as well as venues in western Canada and the Mississippi Delta, most notably with delta blues guitarist, Terry "Big T" Williams. Jeff has studied with premier New Orleans drummer Johnny Vidacovich, Steve Smith at The Seattle Drum School of Music, Dave Jette at Donn Bennett's School of Music in Bellevue, and most recently with Portland's Jimi Bott of Fabulous Thunderbirds and Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers fame. Jeff's lyrics have been described by Canadian blues writer, D.D. Rocker, as "extremely catchy and humorous". Tony Englehart describes Jeff’s drumming as "tasty” and his lyrics "witty". In 2004, Jeff had the opportunity to share drumming credits with legendary blues drummer, Sam Carr, on recordings by The U.K.’s "Son’s of the Delta” which also features the great Pinetop Perkins on piano. Jeff has recently completed a demo recording that features his fine vocal ability well as his drumming. The resulting CD is receiving airplay not only locally, but in Clarksdale, Mississippi as well. Contact Jeff at drummerboy1961@aol.com or telephone 206-909-6366. Jeff has been nominated by the Washington Blues Society for "Best Drums" in 2004 and 2005, while winning that award in 2006

We released a cd in 2000 that includes Ernie Perea on sax, Mike Ernesti on drums, Smokin' Joe Straight on harp, Tom Brooks on standup bass and myself on guitar/vocals.
